This day is for travellers who want to understand the island's twentieth century as well as see its most popular beach. Phu Quoc Prison is a special national relic and the stop that needs a guide most: the protected zone covers 8.5 hectares and its history spans two regimes. Ho Quoc Pagoda shows the island's religious present. Bai Sao gives you the afternoon off.

The order matters. The prison closes over midday. Published hours differ slightly: one official airline guide gives 07:30 – 11:00 and 13:30 – 17:00, an agency guide gives 08:00 – 11:30 and 13:30 – 17:00. Either way, a route that reaches An Thoi at 11:30 waits two hours outside. We arrive mid-morning, inside both versions, and confirm the hours the day before.

The day by the hour

Step 1

07:30 · Pick-up and the east-coast road

Your guide and driver meet you in the lobby. Ho Quoc Pagoda is about 18 km from Duong Dong, on the east coast north of Bai Sao.

MealsNone included

Step 2

08:15 · Ho Quoc Pagoda

The view back over the bay from the bell tower before the heat builds

Thien vien Truc Lam Ho Quoc was begun on 14 October 2011 and inaugurated on 14 December 2012, on a hillside site of about 110 hectares facing the sea. It opens at 06:00, and at 08:15 the light on the steps is still soft. Modest dress is required, and covered shoulders and knees is the usual standard; the guide carries a spare sarong if you forget. Entry is free.

Step 3

09:30 · Phu Quoc Prison

The site, also called Coconut Tree Prison, became a special national relic by a decision of 31 December 2014; the protected zone covers 8.5 hectares. The French ran a prison here from June 1953 to July 1954 that held about 14,000 prisoners. From late 1955 the Republic of Vietnam built the Cay Dua camp on the same site, in 12 detention sections. The guide takes you through the cell areas, the fences and the exhibition rooms and explains each section. The subject is the detention of prisoners in wartime; if anyone in your party would rather skip a room, the guide describes it first so you can choose. Entry is free.

Step 4

11:15 · Lunch

Lunch at a local restaurant between An Thoi and Bai Sao. The guide orders for the table if you like and explains what each dish is.

MealsNone included

Step 5

12:45 · Bai Sao

Bai Sao is about 25 km from Duong Dong, with calm water and pale sand, and the national tourism authority calls it the island's most popular beach. There are flag-marked swimming zones and lifeguards at peak hours. Because the midday sun is harsh, the guide suggests shade until 14:00 and a swim after that. Sunbeds and drinks are paid to the beach businesses directly.

MealsNone included

Step 6

14:45 · Back towards Duong Dong

The drive from the south back to Duong Dong takes about 40 – 50 minutes. You are at your hotel around 15:30. A sunset add-on at Dinh Cau is possible as overtime.

Who this is not for

  • Families with young children; the prison's subject is wartime detention, which is hard to explain to small children. Route A of the half-day guide is a gentler choice.
  • Anyone who wants the Hon Thom cable car and Sunset Town as the main event. Those deserve their own day; adding them here rushes everything.
  • Travellers who cannot cover shoulders and knees, the usual reading of the pagoda's modest-dress rule.
  • Beach-first visitors in the dry season who want the whole afternoon swimming; book a car and skip the guide.

If the plan has to change

If the prison's hours change on the day, the guide reverses the order: beach first, prison at 13:30, pagoda last before it closes at 18:00. In heavy rain, the prison and the pagoda are the parts worth keeping and Bai Sao is dropped. We do not take you on boats from An Thoi; if you plan an island trip on another day, the boat operator runs its own safety checks, which were tightened in July 2026.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Is the prison suitable for teenagers?

Most teenagers handle it well with a guide who explains the context. The subject is wartime detention; the guide describes each room before you enter, so anyone can skip one.

Why visit the pagoda before the prison?

The pagoda opens at 06:00 and is pleasant early; the prison's morning session runs until about 11:00 or 11:30. Doing them in this order keeps both inside their best hours.

Is Bai Sao good to swim in all year?

It is calmest in the rainy-season months from May to October, when the southwest monsoon makes the west coast rough. In the dry season it is still calm most days but busier.

How many prisoners were held at Phu Quoc Prison?

Figures vary by source. One official newspaper gives about 14,000 for the French period of 1953 to 1954; larger totals for the whole war are widely repeated but not from an official museum source. Your guide will explain what the exhibition itself states.
