How to plan a day with a guide

A good guided day on Phu Quoc is built around a few fixed clocks: when the prison closes for lunch, when the market is busy, when the heat peaks and when the sun sets. Get those right and four hours feels like six.

Start with the fixed clocks

Fixed pointTimeHow it shapes the day
Phu Quoc Prisonmorning session to 11:00 or 11:30; afternoon 13:30 – 17:00Arrive mid-morning or just after 13:30, never at 11:30
Ho Quoc Pagoda06:00 – 18:00Early is cooler and quieter; it can also close a south day
Duong Dong market05:00 – 19:00; fresh seafood earlyMorning only, ideally before 09:00
Suoi Da Ban stream08:00 – 17:00Late-morning or afternoon slot
Bach Dang night market17:00 – 22:00; busiest 19:00 – 21:00Ends an evening walk
Sunset, west coastabout 17:40 (Nov) to 18:31 (Jul)Dinh Cau from about 17:00
Midday sun11:00 – 14:00Lunch, indoor sites, shade; not a beach

Then add the road

LegDistance or time (published)
Airport to Duong Dongabout 20 – 30 minutes
Duong Dong to An Thoi (prison)about 40 – 50 minutes
Duong Dong to Ganh Dauabout 30 km; 40 – 50 minutes by car, 50 – 70 by bus timetable
Duong Dong to Ham Ninhabout 14 – 15 km
Duong Dong to Ho Quoc Pagodaabout 18 km
Duong Dong to Bai Saoabout 25 km
Duong Dong to Suoi Tranhabout 9 km
Duong Dong or airport to Sunset Townabout 20 – 30 minutes

Add ten minutes to every leg for parking, buying tickets and walking in. A route that looks like three hours of stops and one hour of driving on a map is usually a five-hour day in practice.

What fits in four hours, and what needs eight

Combination4 hours8 hoursNote
Duong Dong market, river mouth, Dinh CauYes—Morning, on foot
Forest stream plus Ham NinhYes—Afternoon, car advised
Prison plus Ho Quoc PagodaJustYes, with Bai SaoStart 13:00 for the half-day version
Ganh Dau, Rach Vem, park edgeNoYesToo far for four hours
Duong Dong morning plus east coastNoYesGood first full day
North and south in one dayNoNoToo much driving; split it

When in doubt, choose fewer stops and more time at each. The guide's value is in the explaining, and explaining needs minutes, not just arrival.

Building your own route in five steps

  1. 01

    Pick one anchor

The stop with fixed hours that matters most to you: the prison, the market, a sunset.

  2. 02

    Place it on the clock

Morning market, mid-morning prison, sunset at Dinh Cau. Everything else moves around it.

  3. 03

    Add one or two neighbours

Stops on the same coast, not the opposite one.

  4. 04

    Leave slack

Thirty minutes unplanned in four hours, an hour in eight. You will use it.

  5. 05

    Decide where it ends

Your hotel, a restaurant, the night market. It changes the last drive.

Send the result in the form, even roughly. We return it with real times and tell you honestly if it does not fit.

Costs outside the guide fee, explained

  • Tickets. Several places on our routes are free, including the prison and the pagoda. Streams charge small tickets: about VND 10,000 – 30,000 per adult (published prices; confirm before travel). Theme parks and the Hon Thom cable car are in a different price range altogether.
  • Lunch. Yours is paid on the day. The guide's and the driver's lunch on eight-hour days is in our quote.
  • Overtime. If you choose to stay longer, the overtime rate on your quote applies per started half hour. If we run late, you do not pay for it.
  • Pick-up outside the standard area. Bai Dai and Bai Khem add road time, priced in advance.
  • Language other than English. Subject to availability, and priced when we can cover it.

The full breakdown, with the few published market figures we could find, is on the pricing page.

Season and weather

From November to April the weather is dry and the west coast calm; anything works. From May to October, plan with the coasts in mind: the west coast is rougher and the east coast calmer, showers are short and heavy, and the north's dirt roads can be muddy. July to September can bring storms with heavy rain and fairly strong wind, though Phu Quoc is among the places in Vietnam least often hit directly.

Heat is the other limit. April middays often reach 34 – 36 °C. Start early, put indoor or shaded stops between 11:00 and 14:00, and save beaches for the late afternoon.

Photography and early mornings

If photographs matter, plan the day backwards from light. In Duong Dong first light comes about 20 minutes before sunrise, which ranges from about 05:43 in late June to 06:25 in mid January. Sunset is over the sea on the west coast; sunrise over the sea is on the east coast. Our morning market and photo walk is built entirely around this.

Travelling with children or older relatives

  • Keep the day to four hours, or eight with a long lunch and a rest in the car.
  • Choose routes with short walks: route A in Duong Dong or the south day suit most people; forest paths do not.
  • Ask for a car with room for a child seat if you need one; tell us the age.
  • Plan around naps and meals rather than ticket times; the guide adapts.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Can we combine the north and the south in eight hours?

Not well. The two ends of the island are far apart by road and the day turns into driving. Split them across two days or choose one.

What if we want a beach in the middle of the day?

Beaches at midday mean strong sun; agency safety advice is to avoid swimming between 11:00 and 14:00. Put the beach after 14:00 and the indoor stops before.

Can the guide build a route around a restaurant we have read about?

Yes. Give us the name and we will place it where it fits. If it adds a long drive, we will say so.
