Dương Đông (Duong Dong), the working town

Duong Dong is where Phu Quoc's fishing fleet, its main market, the Dinh Cau shrine and its night market sit within a short walk of each other. It is busy, not pretty, and the place where the island makes sense.

What Duong Dong actually is

Duong Dong is the island's main town. Since 1 July 2025 the former ward has been part of the Phu Quoc special zone of An Giang province, so you will see both old and new names on signs. The town is built around the river: boats tie up along it, the market sits back from it, and at its mouth, on a reef of rock, stands Dinh Cau.

It is not a resort. Traffic is heavy at rush hours, building work is everywhere, and the streets near the market are wet and smell of fish in the morning. That is also why it is worth a few hours: this is where the island's seafood trade, religious life and evening street food happen in plain view. South of Dinh Cau, Bai Truong (Long Beach) runs for over 20 km, and that is where most hotels are.

How long to give it

One early morning and one evening. The morning is for the river, the shrine and the market, and it is finished by 10:00, when the heat and flat light arrive. The evening is for sunset at Dinh Cau and the night market. Spending a whole middle of the day in Duong Dong adds little: the shops are ordinary and the shade is scarce.

Sunrise in Duong Dong ranges from about 05:43 in late June to 06:25 in mid January. Sunset ranges from about 17:40 in November to 18:31 in July, and the sun sets over the sea, which is why Dinh Cau and the beach south of it fill up at that hour.

When to go

JFMAMJJASONDDuong Dong and west coast

Dry season November to April; the west-coast sea is roughest May to October, though town walks still work between showers.

The dry season from November to April gives calm, clear water off the west coast and dependable sunsets. From May to October the southwest monsoon brings bigger waves and murkier water to the west side, and short heavy showers. Town walks still work in those months; the market does not stop for rain. April is the hottest month, with middays often at 34 – 36 °C, so keep walks to the early morning.

Guided days that start here

The morning market and photo walk covers the river, the shrine and the market before breakfast, with an evening version for sunset and the night market. Route A of the half-day guide does the same in a later, gentler morning and adds coffee and a fish sauce barrel house. Both work without a car.

When to skip Duong Dong

  • If you are on a short beach stay in the far north or south and the drive in would eat your only free morning.
  • If wet floors and fish smells spoil your day; the market is not a tidy food hall.
  • If you want quiet. Evenings near the night market are loud and crowded from 19:00.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Is the night market the same as the Duong Dong market?

No. Duong Dong market is the daytime market, open from 05:00 to 19:00. The Bach Dang night market, formerly called the Dinh Cau night market, opens from 17:00 to 22:00. There is also a separate night market in Sunset Town in the south.

Can we visit Dinh Cau shrine as tourists?

Yes. Dress modestly, keep your voice down and do not photograph people praying without asking. A guide will tell you where to stand.

Do we need a guide in Duong Dong?

No, the town is easy on foot. A guide is useful at the market, where the guide can name and price what is on the trays, and at the shrine, where the meaning of the offerings is not obvious.

Is Duong Dong a good place to stay?

It is central, and pick-up for all our guided days is included. It is noisier than Ong Lang or Bai Truong.
