Three parts of the island, and what a guide adds

Phu Quoc is about 50 km from north to south, and each coast behaves differently by season. These pages describe the three areas our guides know best, what is there, how long to give each, and when to avoid it.

The island in one paragraph

Phu Quoc is a special zone (dac khu) of An Giang province, an island of about 589 square kilometres including its islets, roughly 50 km long and up to about 25 km wide. The main town, Duong Dong, sits on the west coast where the Duong Dong river meets the sea. The airport is about 10 km south of it. The north is mostly national park and a cluster of large resorts and theme parks at Bai Dai; the east coast has old fishing villages and the ferry port at Bai Vong; the south has An Thoi, the prison relic, Sunset Town and the beaches at Bai Sao and Bai Khem.

Which coast in which season

JFMAMJJASONDWest coast, Duong DongEast coast, Ham Ninh to Bai SaoNorth, Ganh Dau and park

3 = best, 2 = good, 1 = possible but expect rain, rough west-coast sea or muddy dirt roads. Dry season is November to April; in the southwest monsoon from May to October the west coast gets bigger waves and the east-coast beaches are calmer. Our reading of the sources, not a forecast.

The pattern is simple once you know it. In the dry months, from November to April, the northeast monsoon brings sun and the west coast is calm and clear. From May to October the southwest monsoon turns the west coast rough and murky while the east coast, including Bai Sao and Bai Khem, is calmer. Heavy rain comes in short bursts rather than all day, and April is the hottest month, with middays often at 34 – 36 °C.

What a guide changes in each area

Duong Dong

Language at the market, etiquette at Dinh Cau, and the timing of the catch. On your own you see a town; with a guide you see who is doing what and why.

East coast

Context at Ham Ninh, ordering by weight at the seafood restaurants, and the route that links the village with a forest stream or the pagoda without backtracking.

The north

The way through the dirt roads, a safe short walk at the park edge, and timing at Rach Vem for the starfish months. Without a car and someone who knows the roads, the north is slow.

Moving between the areas

The three areas link up in a rough triangle. Duong Dong to Ham Ninh is about 14 to 15 km across the middle of the island; the airport and Bai Vong port sit close to Ham Ninh. Duong Dong to Ganh Dau is about 30 km, 40 to 50 minutes by car, partly on red-dirt roads. Going from Ham Ninh straight to the north means crossing back through the middle or taking forest roads, so most routes treat the north as its own day.

That is why our full days stay mostly on one side of the island. An eight-hour day can join Duong Dong and the east coast comfortably. It cannot join the north and the south without turning into a driving tour, which is the one thing a guide cannot make interesting.

Areas we cover only in passing

The south, from An Thoi to Bai Sao, appears on our south and heritage day for the prison and the pagoda, but we do not have a separate area page for it. Hon Thom, the cable car and the An Thoi islands are reached by cable car or boat, which we do not sell. Bai Truong, the long beach running south of Dinh Cau for over 20 km, is where many guests stay; our guides collect you there.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Which area suits a first visit?

Duong Dong, because it explains the rest of the island: fishing, the shrine, the market and the night market are all within walking distance.

Can we see two areas in one day?

In eight hours, yes: Duong Dong in the morning and the east coast in the afternoon works well. The north and the south together is too much driving for one day.

Where should we stay to use a guide?

Duong Dong, Ong Lang or Bai Truong are central, so pick-up is included and road time is short. Bai Dai and Bai Khem add road time to most routes.
