The north is the part of Phu Quoc that most visitors only cross on the way to the theme parks at Bai Dai. This day stops there instead. About 70 per cent of the island is national park, and its forest comes down close to the roads in the north. Beyond it are a fishing settlement of floating fish farms, a cape about 4 km by sea from Cambodian waters (agency sources), and two quieter beaches on the way back.

It suits people who like slow roads and small places, and it needs a car: the stops are spread over more than 30 km and some connecting roads are red dirt. It is a dry-season day. From May to October those sections can be muddy, and the west-coast sea is rougher.

The day by the hour

Step 1

08:00 · Pick-up and the road north

Your guide and driver collect you from the lobby. The road leaves Duong Dong on DT973 and heads north. On the way the guide explains how the island is laid out and why the north stayed forested while the west coast filled with resorts.

MealsNone included

Step 2

08:30 · The national park edge at Xom Moi

An hour in the forest before the heat, when birds are most active

About 13 km north of town the road reaches the Xom Moi forest ranger station, described as the park entrance. Phu Quoc National Park was upgraded from a nature reserve in 2001 and covers over 31,422 hectares; it lies in the core zone of the Kien Giang biosphere reserve recognised by UNESCO in 2006. About 200 bird species are recorded. You walk a short stretch of forest path with the guide, long enough to see the canopy and hear it, not a summit trek.

MealsNone included

Step 3

10:00 · Rach Vem fishing settlement

Rach Vem is a fishing settlement of about 180 households known for fishing and net-making, with floating fish farms offshore. From roughly February to April, starfish gather in the shallows off its beach. Look, do not lift them out of the water: the guide will explain why.

MealsNone included

Step 4

11:00 · Ganh Dau cape, then lunch

Ganh Dau is about 30 km from Duong Dong. From the cape you can see the small islands on the Cambodian side; agency sources put the border about 4 km away by sea. The beach below is clear and usually calm in the dry season, with rocks at the point. Lunch is at a seafood restaurant in Ganh Dau; the guide translates the menu and the market prices by weight.

MealsNone included

Step 5

13:30 · A pepper garden

Phu Quoc is known for black pepper, and the north has gardens that welcome visitors. The guide explains how the vines are trained and harvested and how pepper is graded. Buying is your choice; there is no commission arrangement on our side.

MealsNone included

Step 6

14:30 · Vung Bau beach

A crescent of sand between Ong Lang and Bai Dai. Half an hour to swim or sit in the shade before the drive south.

MealsNone included

Step 7

15:15 · Cua Can river and village

The Cua Can river reaches the sea at a sandbar. The guide walks you over the village bridge and talks about life on the river. Some operators sell kayak and basket-boat paddles here; we do not arrange them, but the guide can point out where they start.

MealsNone included

Step 8

16:00 · Back at your hotel

From Cua Can to central Duong Dong is a short drive. If you want to end the day at Dinh Cau for sunset instead, tell us when you book; it adds time, charged as overtime.

Who this is not for

  • Anyone planning to spend the day at VinWonders, Vinpearl Safari or Grand World. Those are ticketed parks with their own transport; a guide adds little inside.
  • Walkers who want the Nui Chua summit at 603 m. That trek takes several hours on its own and needs a separate plan.
  • Travellers in September and October who will be unhappy if dirt roads are muddy and the cape is grey.
  • People prone to car sickness on long drives with stops; the day has about two hours on the road in total.

Safety and rules in the park

The guide keeps the group together on forest paths and decides where to turn back. Wear long sleeves and closed shoes; bring a hat and insect repellent. Nothing is cooked in the forest because of the fire risk, and rubbish leaves with you. In the rainy season streams can rise fast, so swimming in them is off the plan from May to October.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Can we add VinWonders or the Safari to this day?

You can be dropped at either at the end of the day instead of returning to your hotel. Published adult tickets are VND 1,050,000 for VinWonders and VND 950,000 for the Safari (published prices, 2025 – 2026; confirm before travel). The guide does not go in unless you add the guide's ticket and time.

Is the forest walk difficult?

No. It is a short walk at the park edge on an uneven path. Anyone who can manage stairs and roots is fine.

Will we see starfish at Rach Vem?

Agency sources say they gather from about February to April. Outside those months, or after a storm, there may be few or none.

Can we start earlier?

Yes. A 07:00 start gives more time in the forest when it is cooler and returns you by 15:00.
